FEB. 24,1981 Trucker Pinned Inside Vehicle Robert Eugene Fwatt, 43, of Greenville, Michigan was trapped inside the cab of his truck for over an hour Saturday morning at the junction of 1-26 exit and Hwy. 108 at Columbus. He was freed by the Polk County Rescue Squad and taken to St. Luke's Hospital where his condition was listed as stable. He suffered a broken arm and leg The truck owned by Transportation Sales. Fla was going south on 1-26 and after taking the 1-26 exit ramp, the trucker failed to stop when he reached the stop sign before entering Hwy. 108 The vehicle tried to turn right toward Tryon but flipped on its side and crashed into the guardrail in front of Columbus Quick Amoco. Patrolman David Satterfield charged the driver with failure to decrease speed to avoid an accident. The truck was a total loss. Fire The Tryon Volunteer Fire Department was called to a small woods fire on Caroliha Drive Saturday about 3 p.m. The fire was near The Meeting place. No damage was done All Tournament The Appalachian Conference Basketball Tournament was concluded in Landrum Saturday night with the Edneyville JVs, Edneyville girls and Tryon boys winning the championships. Someone broke the glass window and took the watches. Tryon Policeman Nathan Shields was on the scene in less than two minutes, but the thief has disappeared.
